Note · सूचना

Forty minutes is allotted for this examination. The tanpura is mandatory for the base note. Harmonium accompaniment is not accepted. A different raag should be asked in each column so that the full syllabus is examined.

Theory · शास्त्र

Detailed exposition of all prescribed raags and a comparative study of their similarities and differences with examples; identifying a raag from a group of notes and elaborating it. Detailed study of every taal from the first year onward, with practice writing them in both the Vishnu Digambar and Bhatkhande notations. Ability to write dugun and chaugun of all prescribed taals in both notations, and to notate every learned bandish in both systems.

Introduction to modern and ancient raag lakshan, jaatigayan, sanyas, vinyas, apanyas, alpatva-bahutva, aavirbhav-tirobhav, and gayaki-nayaki. Biographies of Gopal Nayak, Amir Khusro, Man Singh Tomar, Jayadeva, Tyagaraja, Tansen and Purandaradasa. Bharata’s division of the 22 shrutis among the seven notes of the ancient scale. Detailed knowledge of the views on the merits and faults of singers set out in the Sangeet Ratnakar.

Ability to write essays on: classical music and folk music; the contribution of science to the development of music; literature and music; and the importance of music in life.

Swar Knowledge (Notes) · स्वरज्ञान

Ability to tune the tanpura to one’s own pitch. Special preparation of taans. Ability to develop a raag properly and present its true form. Building the elaboration through aalap and bol-aalap. Basic knowledge of tuning the tabla and playing the theka.

Raag Knowledge · रागज्ञान

In the following six raags: a vilambit khayal (in two different taals) and a drut khayal, or masitkhani and razakhani gats. Command of the mukhda of each raag is required, and each must be elaborated for fifteen minutes. Six further raags are prescribed for general knowledge.

The first six raags are for detailed study; the remaining six for general knowledge.

  • Ability to sing one dhrupad and one dhamar in dugun, tigun and chaugun in the above raags. Instrumental students prepare the same number of gats in Teevra and Aada Chautaal.
  • Presenting taranas or drut gats in any two of the prescribed raags.
  • Ability to sing or play the Mandal prayer "Jai Jagdish Hare".
  • Ability to present one bhajan, one ghazal, one patriotic song and one folk song or dhun.

Taal Knowledge (Rhythm) · ताल-ज्ञान

Reciting dugun of Roopak, Deepchandi and Chautaal. Ability to recite 3-against-2 and 2-against-3 with the help of counts, or to transform one taal into another.
