Raag Tilak Kamod

राग तिलक कामोद

Khamaj thaat Also spelled: Tilakkamod

A light, playful night raga from the Khamaj thaat whose notes never move in a straight line. Turning phrases like Sa Re Ga Sa make it instantly recognisable.

Swara map of Raag Tilak Kamod: uses Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha and Ni, all shuddha; Dha is skipped in the ascent; both lines zigzag (Sa, Re, Ga, Sa) and the descent comes to rest on mandra Ni; Re is the vadi and Pa the samvadi; sung at night; Khamaj thaat.
Nothing moves in a straight line: trace the turns of Sa, Re, Ga, Sa.

Scale and structure

Key rule: A zigzag (vakra) line: Sa Re Ga Sa, Re Pa Ma Ga. Dha is skipped going up, and phrases come to rest on mandra Ni.

Aaroha (ascent)

सा रे ग सा, रे म प नि सां

Avaroha (descent)

सां प ध म ग, सा रे ग सा नि (मंद्र)

Pakad (catch phrase)

प (मंद्र) नि (मंद्र) सा रे ग सा, रे प म ग, सा रे ग सा नि (मंद्र)

Sargam is given in Devanagari, as it is written in practice — a line beneath a note marks it komal (flat), and (मंद्र) marks the lower octave.
